An interesting discussion. David Brooks tells an interesting story and makes and interesting argument, but I don't think he goes far enough.
With the passage of health care, a bill that is sure to be signed into law by the President, President Obama, the Democrats in Congress, and the American people have achieved a success that has eluded Presidents and Congresses of both parties for the last sixty years.

"My fellow Americans, the fact that the recent Copenhagen climate summit was a bust in terms of solving our energy/climate problems doesn't mean that we can ignore those problems — or that we can ignore how individual countries, like Denmark, have effectively addressed them.
A very interesting blog on the question of the Senate Health Care bill. There is a very good graph in the original, I urge you to link on the orignal seeded article.
Well, if I had a chance to move back to Ohio to be closer to my family (which I did) and managed to actually get here (which I did) that feels like very good news to me. But what do I do with my Newsvine screenname which was originally derived as PennsylvaniA Neal.

AP - In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry.
I don't think we should be taxing Cadillac health care. It's too cumbersome, too hard to understand and only benefits the tax accountants and attorneys. It is regressive, it hits middle incomes too unfairly, and it is too complicated to understand.

Pennsylvania legislature finally gets their June work done in October. This was ridiculous! Even the Congress with its abysmially low approval ratings, does better than most state legislatures...
"The Republican Party is unpopular because it's more interested in pleasing Rush's ghosts than actual people. The party is leaderless right now because nobody has the guts to step outside the rigid parameters enforced by the radio jocks and create a new party identity.
I'm not a lawyer, but I thought it was obvious ethics violations had occurred back when the story first broke. Gifts from parents, son hired by the RNC. This isn't just about sex and hypocrisy, this is about financial ethical wrongdoing.
The conclusion is that the progressives will have to accept a health care bill that is less than perfect. Purging the blue dogs is unthinkable to me.
If fraud and prostitution are grounds for losing federal funding, then there are lots of worse perpetrators than Acorn ever was.
Is Obama the tortoise or the hare? Is he threatening us with rampant socialism or is he an ineffectual mouthpiece that is accomplishing nothing?
A "Wingnut" on another thread. said: "people -- liberals -- like yourself cannot be dealt with rationally" My reply, slightly expanded here, was: And you think you sound rational?? I don't think so...

"The administration also is trying to compile a simplified and lower-cost blueprint for legislation that would plainly put Mr. Obama's stamp on the issue, and more clearly identify it with him.
If "we" think we're getting messed with, it's because "we" are!
The country is united on the fact that health care is important, that it is too expensive, that the trends are headed in the wrong direction and something needs to be done.

The problems that President Barack Obama inherited in January have been compared repeatedly with those facing Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933.
Income growth in America for the last few decades has been overwhelmingly concentrated at the top.
I like Howard Fineman, he seems like a real regular guy. This piece hits on how the confirmation hearings were essentially created by CNN and should be greatly limited in their scope and purpose.
Today after school I was privileged to listen to an original poem. It was written by Connor McCandless, a second grader who is my S.O.s wonderful grandson. It is about my S.O.s dog Otis, a pug: fuzzy

Well, it appears that the big worry of a week ago Saturday or so -- a deadly epidemic of an uncontrollable strain of flu -- isn't going to be as much of a worry than we thought. Maybe part of the reason it didn't spread so fast is that a lot of people took a lot of precautions.
Treating patients with multple conditions -- something that the drug research and our over reliance on specialists doesn't properly take account of.
A question that came up recently is whether or not the super-rich are happy, or does their wealth actually tend to make them unhappy? A lot of the clamor for justice from the public, because of the unearned bonuses being handed out to greedy CEOs while taxpayers foot the bill, s …

Quick fixes almost never give the best long-term results. If something seems overwhelming, be it personal, business, or political, doing a little bit on a regular basis will in the long run make it easier to do the right thing, as it becomes a habit.
